Rethinking the City: A Talk with David S. Rotenstein
I've been doing Rethinking the City (RTC) since 2011. The idea behind RTC emerged from a conversation at Urban Rethink (UR). If you don't know UR, you missed out. Suffice to say many interesting community-centric ideas emerged from the co-working/creative/community accelerator that UR. One idea was RTC. Along with Eliza Harris Juliano, Sarah Elbadri, David Thomas Moran, and Jason Reynolds, I curate a monthly symposium that features a guest speaker offering insight into contemporary urban issues. RTC is ad hoc, volunteer, and flexible.
This conversation with David S. Rotenstein about gentrification, race, and housing history in Decatur, Georgia was done as part of an experiment with developing a podcast under the RTC umbrella. The infrastructure to support a podcast is no simple thing and doing it well take some time. I recorded this conversation last year, but the substance is important enough that I finally got time to work on trying to create a workable conversation from the raw recording.
